2009 Watt Sells Award Winners Announced

The AICPA recently announced the 2009 Watt Sells Award winners. The award, named after CPA pioneer Elijah Watt Sells, are presented to the ten CPA candidates who passed each of the four sections of the CPA Exam on the first attempt and who achieved the highest cumulative scores for all four sections of the exam within a calendar year. This year the number of award winners was unique because multiple candidates received identical cumulative scores, resulting in a tie, and therefore increasing the total number of winners to 15.

The 2010 Big Four Firms Performance Analysis

Big4.com, a global social network for Big Four alumni and professionals, recently released The 2010 Big Four Firms Performance Analysis which provides a detailed financial and operating analysis of the Big 4 firms.

Interesting observations include:

  • Deloitte with its 1.8% growth in 2010 took over the number one spot to become the largest accounting firm in the world.
  • In general, the Big 4 saw modest growth in 2010, at an average of 1.4%
  • The outlook for 2011 is optimistic with revenue growth for the Big 4 firms projected at 4-7%.

The CPA Exam is Going International in 2011

The CPA Exam, which is jointly administered by the AICPA, NASBA and Prometric, will be available in five international locations starting in the second half of 2011, including Japan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Lebanon, and the United Arab Emirates. It will be the same exam offered in the U.S., and it will be given in English only, regardless of location.

Accountants Anticipate More Business Hiring

According to a recent study conducted by financial analysis technology developer Sageworks, approximately 89% of public accountants believe that businesses will either hire more in 2011 than they did in 2010, or they'll at least maintain employee count into 2011.

Sageworks found that 23 percent of the accountants polled expect businesses to increase their employee headcount in 2011, while 66.4 percent expect businesses to maintain their number of employees in 2011.
