Healthcare Industry, Part 1—Overview and Update
Learning objectives

The healthcare environment is growing and experiencing rapid change. Both providers and insurers are highly regulated by the government and providers receive a significant amount of their revenue from government sources. Healthcare providers have more than one customer, the patient and the payment source, which increases the complexity in gaining market share. This session will help the participant gain a basic understanding of the current healthcare landscape and enable auditors to document and understand the external environment for their audit risk assessments. Practitioners in industry will be able to use this information to identify the risks to and opportunities for their entities. At the conclusion of this session you will be able to:

  • Identify the main drivers for healthcare providers and insurer
  • Recognize how the external environment impacts healthcare entities today
  • Identify the risks present in the healthcare industry and identify risk responses for healthcare entities
  • Identify and describe the major reimbursement mechanisms in healthcare entities
