CPA Exam Structure

Insight and information on how you'll be tested

| |

Multiple-choice questions

Multiple-choice questions appear on all four parts of the exam and are based on the topics described in the Content Specification Outlines (CSOs). They serve as a proxy for assessing your knowledge and understanding of the content.

Task-based simulations

Task-based simulations represent a unique question format that uses real-life work situations to test your in-depth knowledge and skills in a particular subject area. Task-based simulations appear on three of the exam parts: Financial Accounting and Reporting, Auditing and Attestation, and Regulation.

Written communications tasks

Appearing only in the Business Environment and Concepts exam part, communications tasks require you to respond to essay questions based on the topics outlined in the CSOs. You will have access to word processing for answering.
