Material Participation

The standard used to determine whether a taxpayer worked and was involved in a business activity on a regular basis, or was only an investor. Material participants are allowed to deduct any losses from that activity against their ordinary income whereas nonmaterial participants' loss deductions may be limited by the passive activity rules.
