Materials Requirements Planning (MRP)

Materials resource planning systems extend the idea of computerized inventory control to manufacturing. Sales personnel estimate how many products will be sold in the future. The MRP system backtracks using estimated times to assemble each product. The system then explodes the product into lists of parts needed, using bills of materials for each product. The needed parts are ordered at times backdated from the assembly dates. See also bill of materials.
