Payroll Tax

A tax based on an employee's wages, tips, and salaries. Part of the tax is deducted from the employee's pay; the employer pays the rest. Federal, state, and local governments collect payroll taxes for expenses such as Social Security, Medicare, unemployment compensation, and workers' compensation insurance.
