Accounting Dictionary

Points

A charge paid by a borrower for taking out a loan, (i.e., prepaid interest) in which each point is one percent of the loan amount. Most points must be amortized over the life of the loan; however, points paid to acquire or make improvements to a taxpayer's main residence are deductible in the year paid.
