Property Dividend

Property dividends distribute noncash assets (inventory, investment securities, etc.) to shareholders. They are nonreciprocal transfers of nonmonetary assets from a corporation to its shareholders. On the declaration date, the property to be distributed is restated to fair value and any gain or loss is recognized in income. The dividend liability and related debit to retained earnings is recorded at the fair value of the assets transferred. See also cash dividend and stock dividend.
