Accounting Dictionary

Recognized Gain or Loss

The amount of gain or loss on a transaction that is reported for income tax purposes. In some situations, such as like-kind exchanges, the recognition of gains and losses is deferred. Therefore, the realized gain/loss is not necessarily the same as the recognized gain/loss.
