Step-Down Method

The method of allocating service department costs that begins by allocating one service department's costs to production departments and to all other service departments. A second service department's costs, including costs allocated from the first, are then allocated to production departments and to all other service departments except the first one, etc. The costs of all service departments are ultimately allocated to production departments.
