Learning objectives

After completing this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Identify and describe the different types of state and local taxes
  • Define nexus
  • Explain state nexus standards and recognize activities that create nexus for both sales tax and corporate income tax
  • Define voluntary disclosure agreement and explain the related process
  • Identify the various apportionment factors and methods used by states
  • Recognize various rules and concepts regarding the sales factor
  • Calculate state apportionment
  • Define the various forms of state tax conformity to the Internal Revenue Code
  • Identify common federal and state tax differences and apply them to the calculation of state taxable income
  • List and explain various filing requirements for pass-through entities
  • Recognize evolving state and local tax laws

Janelle Wilson Simpson worked for Deloitte Tax in London, England and Seattle, WA as a Tax Manager. She taught as an Adjunct Professor at Utah Valley University. She now provides tax consulting and compliance services independently.
