Becker CIA Exam Review vs. Budget Alternatives

Becker CIA Exam Review vs. Budget Alternatives

Once you've committed to earning the Certified Internal Auditor® (CIA®) certification, the next choice is how you'll prepare for the three-part CIA Exam. The options range widely: free practice questions, inexpensive question-bank subscriptions, self-study textbooks, and full review courses, often at very different price points. Cost is an easy way to narrow the field, but it doesn't tell you much on its own. A better approach is to look at what each option provides and what it costs you if your preparation falls short on exam day. This guide compares Becker's CIA Exam Review with lower-cost alternatives so you can make the choice that fits your goals, your schedule, and your budget.

Summary

Budget CIA Exam prep may look like the cheaper choice, but because every failed CIA Exam part means paying a $280–$445 exam fee again, Becker's CIA Exam Review—built in partnership with The IIA® and backed by a Pass Guarantee on Premium and Pro—is designed to lower the total cost of earning your CIA.

How Much Does the CIA Exam Cost?

The CIA certification has two kinds of fees, both paid to The Institute of Internal Auditors® (The IIA®): a one-time program application fee and a separate registration fee for each exam part. Under The IIA's current fee schedule, The IIA members pay $120 to apply, $310 for Part 1, and $280 each for Parts 2 and 3, for a first-attempt total of $990. Non-members pay $240 to apply, $445 for Part 1, and $415 each for Parts 2 and 3, for a total of $1,515.

Those totals assume that you pass every part on your first attempt. If you don't pass a part, you register and pay that part's full, non-refundable exam fee again. You also have just three years from enrollment in the CIA program to pass all three parts, and every retake uses up part of that time.

So, the meaningful comparison—more than strict sticker price—is what it will cost you, in fees and in time, to get through all three parts.

What Does Budget CIA Exam Prep Include?

Lower-cost CIA prep usually achieves its price by leaving things out. You may get question banks or a collection of topics, but lack well-rounded support:

  • Questions without teaching: Many budget products are mainly question banks. Practice questions are valuable, but they can't replace instruction when you don't understand why an answer is correct. The CIA Exam asks you to apply internal audit principles to realistic scenarios, so recognizing a familiar question isn't the same as being ready for a new one.
  • No clear path through the material: Without a structured plan, it's up to you to decide what to study, in what order, and for how long. That often means wasted study time and uneven learning.
  • Content that may lag behind the exam: The CIA Exam was updated in 2025 to align with The IIA's current standards and a new exam syllabus. Materials that haven't been fully rebuilt around the current syllabus can leave you studying outdated frameworks and terminology.
  • Little support when you're stuck: If help is limited to a discussion board or a slow email queue, one confusing topic can stall your study plan for days.

For most candidates, these gaps lead to more study hours or a retake, and either one can wipe out the initial savings that made the budget option appealing.

What Does Becker CIA Exam Review Include?

Becker's CIA Exam Review is built around the three parts of the CIA Exam: Internal Audit Fundamentals, Internal Audit Engagement, and Internal Audit Function. It's developed in partnership with The IIA, the organization that governs the CIA certification and sets the global standards for internal auditing, and Becker works directly with The IIA to keep the course aligned with the current exam syllabus. Your prep starts with a customizable study planner that maps your work to your target exam dates and the number of hours you can realistically commit each week.

Highlights included in every Becker CIA Exam Review package:

  • 3,300+ practice multiple-choice questions based on the CIA Exam syllabus, plus Adapt2U technology that builds unlimited practice tests around the topics where you need the most work
  • Six full-length simulated exams (two per part) that reflect the real exam's time and format, so you can build pacing and confidence before test day
  • 250+ concept videos that teach the material through practical examples, plus 650+ SkillBuilder videos that walk through how to solve practice questions step by step
  • Newt™, Becker's AI study assistant, for instant, course-grounded answers as you study
  • Digital textbooks and flashcards, plus an Android mobile app for studying on the go
  • Unlimited support from Becker's learning support team

That structure is especially useful on the CIA Exam, where content weighting varies widely by domain. A guided plan helps you spend your hours where the exam spends its questions, which matters even more if you're balancing exam prep with a full-time audit role.

Built With The IIA and Taught by CIAs

Becker's partnership with The IIA brings together the body that oversees the CIA certification with Becker's 70 years of exam review experience. The result is course content created to reflect what the current CIA Exam actually covers, not an approximation of it.

The course is taught by Certified Internal Auditors whose backgrounds include Big Four audit practice, university accounting faculty, and internal audit and risk advisory work. They break down complex standards and engagement concepts with practical, real-world examples, so you understand how the rules apply rather than memorizing them in isolation.

With many low-cost products, it can be hard to tell who wrote the material or how closely it follows the current syllabus. Knowing your course was developed alongside The IIA and is taught by people who hold the CIA gives you a firmer foundation for trusting what you study.

Newt™: Help the Moment You Need It

Losing momentum on a difficult concept is one of the biggest challenges of self-study. Newt™, Becker's AI study assistant, is built into the CIA Exam Review and draws on Becker's own course content. When a lecture topic or practice question doesn't click, you can ask Newt and get an explanation tied directly to what you're studying, without leaving the course. General AI chatbots can be helpful, but they aren't connected to your course or the current CIA syllabus, and on internal audit standards, an answer that's outdated or imprecise can steer your preparation in the wrong direction. Course-grounded help like this is difficult for a stripped-down prep product to replicate.

Support that Lowers Your Risk

Becker also includes safeguards that most low-cost options don't offer:

  • Pass Guarantee: The Premium and Pro CIA packages include Becker's Pass Guarantee. If you become Exam Day ReadySM in the course and still don't pass a part, Becker provides a payment toward your retake (eligibility requirements apply).
  • Unlimited course access (Premium and Pro): Your course stays available until you pass, so access won't run out partway through your three-year eligibility period. Essentials includes 24 months of access.
  • Community: Every package includes access to Becker's private CIA Facebook study group, where candidates trade study tips and share their exam experiences.
  • Flexible payment: FlexPay offers 3-, 6-, or 12-month no-interest payment plans on Premium and Pro packages, so you can start studying with full course access right away and pay over time.

Choosing the Right CIA Exam Review Package

Becker offers three CIA Exam Review packages, so you can choose the level of support that fits how you learn without paying for extras you won't use.

Essentials includes the complete set of core study tools with 24 months of access, a strong fit for self-directed candidates with a defined timeline. Premium adds unlimited access, printed textbooks, and the Pass Guarantee. Pro includes everything in Premium plus LiveOnline virtual classes for candidates who learn best with live instruction. If you hold a qualifying credential such as the CPA, you may also be eligible for the single-exam CIA Challenge Exam, which has its own dedicated Becker review course.

Is Becker CIA Exam Review Worth It?

When you compare your options, look at the full cost of earning the CIA, not just the upfront price of your study materials. With Becker, you get:

  • A structured, customizable study plan built around all three CIA Exam parts
  • Content developed in partnership with The IIA and taught by Certified Internal Auditors
  • Instant, course-grounded answers from Newt™
  • Built-in risk protection through the Pass Guarantee on Premium and Pro

A budget option may cost less when you buy it, but Becker is built to protect what's harder to recover: the retake fees, the study time, and the momentum you lose when your preparation doesn’t lead you to pass.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Much Does the CIA Exam Cost?

Under The IIA's current fee schedule, members pay a $120 application fee plus $310 for Part 1 and $280 each for Parts 2 and 3, for a total of $990. Non-members pay a $240 application fee plus $445 for Part 1 and $415 each for Parts 2 and 3, for a total of $1,515. Each retake requires paying that part's exam fee again.

Can I Pass the CIA Exam Using Only Practice Questions?

Some candidates do, especially experienced internal auditors who already apply much of the tested material in their daily work. However, practice questions alone don't teach the underlying standards and concepts, and lower-cost materials may not fully reflect the current CIA Exam syllabus. Most candidates benefit from a structured course that combines instruction, practice, and a study plan; you can try Becker's CIA Exam Review free to see how it compares with your other options.

What Is the Difference Between Becker's CIA Essentials, Premium, and Pro Packages?

All three packages include the same core study tools, including 3,300+ practice questions, six simulated exams, concept and SkillBuilder videos, digital textbooks, and Newt™. Essentials includes 24 months of course access, while Premium adds unlimited access, printed textbooks, and the Pass Guarantee. Pro includes everything in Premium plus LiveOnline virtual classes.

How Does Becker's CIA Pass Guarantee Work?

The Pass Guarantee is included with Becker's Premium and Pro CIA packages. To qualify for a part, you need to become Exam Day ReadySM by watching at least 80% of the lectures, correctly answering at least 80% of the practice questions, and scoring at least 50% on both simulated exams for that part. If you meet those benchmarks and don't pass, Becker provides a $100 payment toward your retake; full terms are listed on Becker's Pass Guarantee policy page.

Can I Switch to Becker if I Already Started with Another CIA Review Course?

Yes. Many candidates change providers after finding their original course lacked structure, current content, or support. Becker's Switch to Becker program offers savings for candidates moving from another CIA review provider.
