No matter where you are in the world, if you work in finance or accounting and want to advance your career and move into a leadership or strategy role, becoming a Certified Management Accountant will help you reach your goals. One of the first steps to earning this prestigious certification is joining the Institute of Management Accountants and maintaining your membership to gain support through your career. To help you get started as an international CMA, we're connecting you to exactly where you need to go within your region and chapter opportunities to support you on your journey.

About the CMA Certification

First, let's set the foundation about becoming an international CMA and the Institute of Management Accountants.

The Institute of Management Accountants

The Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) serves as the worldwide governing body for management accounting. They grant the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) certification, widely acknowledged as the "gold standard" of management accounting, and those who obtain this designation show their expertise in financial strategy, analytics, and risk mitigation. Notably, this accreditation holds global recognition, so the requirements are the same regardless of your location, eliminating the need to re-test or re-certify across various jurisdictions.

Becoming a CMA

To meet the CMA requirements and earn your certification, you must fulfill the following:

  • Maintain an active IMA membership
  • Enroll in the CMA program and complete registration for the CMA Exam
  • Hold a bachelor's degree or possess an approved professional certification
  • Show two years of professional experience in either management accounting or financial management
  • Successfully pass both parts of the exam.
