What is SAS 142?

In July 2020, the AICPA's Auditing Standards Board released a statement related to new audit evidence standards - SAS 142. This statement includes significant updates related to using emerging technology, including automation, during the audit process, as well as the expanding use of external information sources to gather audit evidence and the relevance and reliability of evidence collected through these channels.

More specifically, SAS 142 provides expanded guidance on how to determine whether the auditor obtained sufficient, appropriate evidence. Also, the statement includes examples of how you as an auditor can use modern tools and technology, such as data analytics or even drones, to assist in the process.

SAS 142 went into effect on December 15, 2022 and supersedes AU-C section 500, Audit Evidence. It also amends other sections of SAS 122, Statements on Auditing Standards.
