What triggers an update to the CPA Exam Review?
There are three main reasons our curriculum team will make an update to our exam content:
Guidance changes
Guidance changes are the most significant driver for updates. When the AICPA, FASB, PCAOB, or other organization issues new or revised standards, our curriculum team tracks when they become testable to ensure our materials reflect the latest changes.
Exam blueprint changes
The AICPA provides a “blueprint” for the CPA Exam, outlining the format of the exam, including representative tasks and technical guidance. When the AICPA announces major changes or releases a new version, Becker’s curriculum team works with the AICPA and reviews the changes to ensure our curriculum aligns with the new or revised blueprint.
Student and instructor feedback
Often, minor updates are informed by feedback from students, instructors, and our academic support teams. For example, if students report a gap in coverage or a confusing question, the curriculum team reviews and revises content to improve clarity and ensure comprehensive coverage of exam topics.
How does Becker update CPA Exam Review content?
Updating content within the CPA Exam Review depends on the changes that need to be made. For large updates, like new guidance or an update to the blueprint, updates follow these steps:
Ongoing research
The curriculum team monitors communication from the AICPA, FASB, and other standard setters, tracking websites, industry news, and guidance updates. They maintain an in-depth spreadsheet to log upcoming changes and how to assign them to future releases based on dates the new or revised standards go into effect.
Collaboration with AICPA
Becker participates in biannual meetings with the AICPA to validate what will be testable in the coming months. This helps ensure our materials are always current, accurate, and aligned with the current blueprint.
Release timing
While Becker updates the curriculum regularly throughout the year, major updates typically must be ready for June and December releases, which typically correspond to when new guidance becomes testable.
