Application Layer (Layer 7)

The top layer of the OSI model that serves as the interface between applications and the network protocol, allowing users to transmit messages. Examples of protocols at this layer include FTP, EDI, Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), and Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP). See also Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) Model and File Transfer Protocol (FTP) and Electronic Data Interchange (EDI).
