Physical Layer (Layer 1)

The bottom layer, which is responsible for converting messages into bits for transmission and converting received bits back into a format interpretable by the Data Link layer. Protocols used in this layer include High-Speed Serial Interface (HSSI), Synchronous Optical Networking (SONET), V.35, and X.21. See also Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) Model.
