2026 EA Exam Changes

A New Testing Timeline in 2026

One of the most notable EA Exam updates is the shift in the testing schedule. In a typical year, the EA Exam testing window closes at the end of February and reopens on May 1. However, for 2026, the timeline is different. Testing still ended at the end of February, but the new testing window will not reopen until July 1, 2026. This delay is tied to one of the biggest structural changes to the exam: the transition to a new testing administrator.

For candidates, this means a longer break between testing windows and potentially more time to study, but you may need to adjust your timeline if you originally planned to test earlier in the year.

Transition to a New Testing Provider

Another major change is the switch in testing providers. Previously, the EA Exam was administered by Prometric testing centers. Beginning in July 2026, testing will be handled by PSI. This transition represents a significant operational shift and comes with improvements to testing accessibility. PSI introduces new flexibility in how candidates can take the exam, including remote testing options.

Remote Testing Expands Access

Introducing remote testing is the most candidate-friendly of the 2026 EA Exam changes.

In prior years, all candidates were required to take the exam in person at designated testing centers. Starting in 2026, U.S.-based candidates can choose between taking the exam at a PSI testing center or completing it remotely using a compatible personal device.

While this added flexibility allows candidates to select a testing format that best fits their schedule and environment, the ability to choose in-person or remote testing is only available to candidates in the United States. International candidates will only be able to test remotely.

Changes to Exam Structure and Breaks

The structure of the exam itself has also been updated, particularly when it comes to how test content is divided and how breaks are handled.

Previously, the exam consisted of 100 questions with a single break offered halfway through (after questions 1–50). In the 2026 version, that structure is replaced with three distinct sections:

  • Section 1: Questions 1–34
  • Section 2: Questions 35–67
  • Section 3: Questions 68–100

Instead of one break, candidates will now have two scheduled breaks, each lasting 10 minutes, after completing Sections 1 and 2.

These breaks are optional, meaning candidates can choose to skip them and continue working through the exam. However, candidates should know that once you submit a section, you cannot return to it. This makes pacing and review strategies more important than ever.

For candidates preparing under the new system, make sure you practice completing sections confidently before moving forward.

EA Exam Scoring Updates

The 2026 EA Exam updates also include a change to the scoring system.

Previously, candidates received a scaled score ranging from 40 to 130, with a passing score set at 105. Under the new system, scores will now range from 200 to 800, with 500 as the passing threshold. While the scoring scale has changed, the exam’s pass/fail experience remains largely the same. Candidates who pass will not receive a numerical score, while those who do not pass will receive a score indicating how close they came.

In addition, all candidates, regardless of outcome, will receive a report outlining their strengths and weaknesses. This feedback remains a valuable tool for guiding future study efforts.

What Hasn’t Changed on the EA Exam

Despite the number of EA Exam changes in 2026, some core aspects of the exam remain consistent. For example, the feedback provided after the exam will still highlight strong and weak areas, helping candidates understand their performance.

The pass/fail reporting structure also remains unchanged, ensuring continuity for candidates familiar with the exam format.

These consistencies help balance out the new updates, allowing candidates to rely on familiar elements even as other parts of the experience evolve.

How to Prepare for the 2026 EA Exam Updates

With so many updates, candidates should take time to adjust their preparation strategies.

  1. Be sure to align your study timeline with the new testing window opening on July 1, 2026. If you were planning to test earlier, you may have more time than expected—use it wisely.
  2. Consider your preferred testing format early. If you plan to take the exam remotely, ensure your device and environment meet the requirements so there are no surprises on test day.
  3. Adapt your exam strategy to the new section-based format. Practice working through smaller question sets and build confidence in your ability to complete each section without needing to revisit it.

Understanding these EA Exam updates in advance can help reduce stress, improve performance, and ensure you’re fully prepared for the new testing experience.
